Anthony Mata

Deputy Chief Anthony Mata, a native of Chicago, Illinois, joined the San Jose Police Department in March of 1996. He has a Master's Degree in Public Administration from San Jose State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Deputy Chief Mata is also a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum's (PERF) Senior Management Institute for Police.

As an officer, he worked in the Foothill Division, then as a Field Training Officer, and as a Detective in the Robbery, Day Detective, and Homicide Units. Officer Mata was promoted to Sergeant in December of 2005 where he supervised patrol officers and was later selected to work as a Night and Homicide Detective.

Sergeant Mata was promoted to Lieutenant in November of 2011 where he served as a Patrol Watch Commander. He was then appointed as the Commander of the Administrative Unit for the Bureau of Field Operations and later as the Commander of the Research and Development Unit for the Office of the Chief. Lieutenant Mata was promoted to Captain in March of 2015 and commanded the Foothill Division and was then selected as a Captain in the Bureau of Investigations.

In December 2016, Anthony Mata was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief of Police for the San Jose Police Department and commands the Bureau of Field Operations and also serves as the Department's Liaison to the City's Office of Immigrant Affairs. On April 7, 2019 Deputy Chief Mata assumed command as the Chief Executive Officer.

As a resident of San Jose, Deputy Chief Mata believes in building trust in the community by treating everyone with dignity and respect, listening to issues, and applying policing principles established by the founder of modern policing, Sir Robert Peel, mainly: "the police are the public and the public are the police."


The Office of the Chief Executive Officer oversees the Division of Cannabis Regulation, The City Attorney Investigators, the Police Department Budget Office, Fiscal and Personnel Units, the Permits Unit, Research & Development, and the Secondary Employment Unit.
